The Importance of Preventive Care

Wellness exams are incredibly important to ensure your pet maintains long-term physical health starting as early as a puppy or kitten and extending into their senior years.

Combined with regular vaccinations, parasite prevention and proper nutrition, our routine checkups include physical exams and nutritional assessments in order to give your companion their best shot at excellent lifelong health and well-being.

Wellness visits allow our team of veterinarians to identify and prevent health issues from arising.

In the event that your pet is exhibiting abnormal symptoms or behaviors, it is best to contact us as soon as possible to allow our team of veterinarians to identify, diagnose, and develop an effective treatment plan.

Cat & Dog Wellness Exams, Stanwood

What to Expect During Your Pet's Physical

Our team of veterinarians will perform a thorough physical exam to develop an overall evaluation of the health and well-being of your pet. Routinely scheduled wellness exams at Northwest Veterinary Clinic of Stanwood, including semi-annual geriatric exams, include the following:

General Condition

Your pet's general condition and behavior can give our vets clues about their overall health. The way your pet walks and stand, their alertness and their weight when compared to their breed and size can all be important indicators of their health and well-being.

Coat & Skin

During your pet's checkup, we will examine your cat or dog's skin and coat for signs of issues including dryness, oiliness, lumps, bumps, abnormal hair loss or dandruff.

Face & Head

Your pet's eyes, ears, and nose will be examined for abnormalities or discharge. We will also check the mouth for symptoms of oral health problems such as plaque buildup or periodontal disease.

Internal Health

Heart rate and rhythm, and pulse are vitally important to your pet's heart health. We'll test these to ensure they're normal. The lungs will then be examined for evidence of abnormal breathing.

We will check your pet's lymph nodes for swelling as well as their abdomen to ensure that their kidneys, bladder, liver, spleen and stomach all feel quite normal and that your pet isn't showing any signs of discomfort.

Review of Findings

At the end of your pet's routine wellness exam, your vet will take the time to discuss any concerns they may have about your pet's overall health and talk to you about your dog or cat's nutritional requirements.

Checkups for Puppies & Kittens in Stanwood

Puppies and kittens need proper medical attention in their first few weeks of life to get off to a healthy start.

We will provide your newest best friend with a total physical exam, appropriate immunizations and deworming medication. We will also test them for intestinal parasites. You will be provided with a kitten or puppy "kit" that is filled with educational materials and product samples to help you to care for the newest member of your family.

Please never hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have about caring for your new pet, both at your appointments or following your visits.

Once your puppy or kitten's checkup is complete, you'll return periodically for his or her required booster shots

Seniors

With recent advances in veterinary medical knowledge and care, as well as newer therapies and better nutrition, senior pets are living longer than ever.

While this is excellent news for pets and their owners, it also means that extra attention will need to be paid to your pet's routine healthcare as they grow old. As you pet grows beyond middle age, their routine exams will become even more important to ensure their health, comfort and longevity.

In addition to the routine wellness procedures we perform on all adult pets, we will give special attention to your senior pet's potential geriatric conditions, such as arthritis or decreased vision.

We may also recommend additional laboratory tests for pets as they age in order to give our vets more detailed information about your senior pet's overall well-being and health.

Vaccinations & Prevention

During your pet's vet checkup at our animal hospital serving the Stanwood area, our vets will also check whether your companion requires any preventive care or if they are due for any routine vaccinations or parasite prevention treatments.
